Prescription Dysport® injectable is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for temporarily reducing or eliminating moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport is injected directly into the muscle beneath a furrow, weakening it so it cannot contract.

Dysport, also known as Reloxin, is made from a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, the same neurotoxin used in BOTOX Cosmetic.

Applications for Dysport Injectable

Medically, Dysport is used to treat excessive underarm sweating, symptoms of cervical dystonia (neck pain and abnormal head position), and muscle spasms. Cosmetically, Dysport is used to treat:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

Dysport Injectable Procedure and Results

Using a fine needle, Dysport is injected into targeted facial muscles that cause furrows and lines. No anesthetic is required, though some doctors may use ice packs or a topical cream. Results usually appear within a few days and last up to four months, with longer-lasting effects possible in regularly treated areas. Injections should only be performed by qualified medical professionals.

Candidates for Dysport Injectable

According to the manufacturer, candidates are adults under 65 seeking temporary improvement in moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Dysport may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • Allergies to Dysport or its ingredients
  • Allergy to cow’s milk protein
  • Surgical facial changes
  • Very weak muscles in the treatment area
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Inflammation or infection at the injection site
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds
  • Deep facial scars
  • Thick, oily skin
  • Wrinkles that do not smooth when spread apart

Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, or with a neuromuscular disease should not receive Dysport injections.

Differences Between Dysport and BOTOX Cosmetic

Although both are derived from the same bacterium, anecdotal evidence suggests Dysport may last longer, spread farther, and take effect more quickly than BOTOX Cosmetic.

Side Effects of Dysport Injectable

Side effects are usually mild and temporary, and most patients can resume normal activities immediately. Injection-site side effects may include:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Eyelid drooping can occur when injections are placed in the glabellar region, but typically resolves within three weeks. Overall, Dysport side effects are the same as those of BOTOX Cosmetic.
